Devils Marbles History

The Devils Marbles have held great cultural and spiritual significance for the local Indigenous peoples, particularly the Warumungu, Kaytetye, Alyawarra, and Warlpiri people, for thousands of years. The area is steeped in Aboriginal Dreamtime stories and is believed to have been formed during the Dreaming by ancestral spirits. The first recorded European visit to the Devils Marbles was by explorer John McDouall Stuart in 1860. The site has since become a popular tourist destination, with the Devils Marbles Conservation Reserve being established in 1961 to protect and preserve the area’s unique geological features and cultural heritage.
