Fraser Island, the world’s largest sand island, is situated off the southeastern coast of Queensland, Australia. Stretching over 120 kilometers long and 24 kilometers wide, the island is renowned for its diverse landscapes, including lush rainforests, pristine freshwater lakes, and expansive sand dunes. Fraser Island History

Fraser Island has a long and complex history dating back thousands of years. The Butchulla people, the traditional owners of the island, have inhabited the area for over 5,000 years and maintain a strong spiritual connection to the land. The island, known as K’gari in the Butchulla language, features numerous sacred sites and important cultural areas. European exploration of Fraser Island began in the late 18th century, with the island subsequently being used for logging, sand mining, and tourism. In 1992, Fraser Island was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its outstanding natural values, unique geological features, and diverse ecosystems. Today, the island is jointly managed by the Butchulla Aboriginal Corporation and the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, with a focus on preserving its natural and cultural heritage.
