Kakadu History

The park is home to the Bininj/Mungguy people, who have a deep spiritual connection to the land and continue to maintain their cultural traditions. The region is known for its extensive collection of rock art sites, which provide valuable insights into the lives and culture of the park’s Indigenous inhabitants. In 1979, Kakadu was established as a national park, and in 1981, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its outstanding natural and cultural values.
