About Ningaloo Reef

Ningaloo Reef is a stunning coral reef system situated off the coast of Western Australia, stretching over 260 kilometers. It is the world’s largest fringing reef and boasts a remarkable biodiversity, including over 250 species of coral and more than 500 species of fish. The reef is famous for its seasonal aggregations of whale sharks, manta rays, humpback whales, and sea turtles, making it a popular destination for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts. Ningaloo Reef History

The Ningaloo Coast, which encompasses Ningaloo Reef, has a long history of human habitation, with the traditional custodians of the land being the Yinigudura, Baiyungu, and Thalanyji peoples. These Indigenous groups have maintained a strong spiritual and cultural connection to the region for thousands of years. The reef was first charted by European explorers in the early 19th century, and it later became a protected area to ensure the conservation of its unique marine ecosystem. In 2011, the Ningaloo Coast, including Ningaloo Reef, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its outstanding natural beauty, diverse marine life, and significant ongoing ecological and biological processes.
