About Twelve Apostles

The Twelve Apostles, located in the Port Campbell National Park along the Great Ocean Road, are a group of dramatic limestone stacks rising from the Southern Ocean. These iconic formations were created over millions of years by the erosive forces of wind and waves, and they continue to evolve due to the constant action of the elements. The breathtaking beauty of the Twelve Apostles makes them a must-visit destination for tourists and a symbol of the rugged Australian coastline. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views from the designated viewing platforms, capture stunning photographs, and learn about the geological processes that shaped the stacks.

Twelve Apostles History

The history of the Twelve Apostles dates back millions of years, as the forces of erosion gradually shaped the limestone cliffs along the coastline. The stacks were originally part of the mainland, but over time, the action of wind and waves carved them into their current form. Although called the “Twelve” Apostles, there have never actually been twelve stacks; the name was chosen for tourism purposes. The number of stacks has changed over time, with some collapsing and others forming. The most recent collapse occurred in 2005 when one of the stacks fell, leaving eight remaining. The Twelve Apostles continue to be a symbol of the ever-changing landscape of the Great Ocean Road and an awe-inspiring testament to the power of nature.
