Babinda Boulders
Sacred gorge, emerald swimming holes
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
About 60 kilometres south of Cairns and seven kilometres inland from the small cane town of Babinda, the Boulders is a dramatic gorge where Babinda Creek rushes between enormous granite boulders draped in moss and tropical vegetation. The result is a series of vivid green swimming holes within Wooroonooran National Park, managed by the Cairns Regional Council and free to enter.
The site holds deep spiritual significance for the Yidinji people, whose oral tradition tells of a young woman named Oolana whose spirit watches over the waters. A series of interpretive signs along the walking tracks share this story. The main swimming area is safe for families in calm conditions, with a grassy bank, picnic shelters, barbecues, toilets, and change rooms providing a complete day-out experience.
A short rainforest loop trail leads to the Devil's Pool lookout, where the creek narrows dramatically and the current becomes dangerously fast. Swimming is strictly prohibited in the Devil's Pool area. The lookout itself provides a striking view of the gorge and is accessible on a well-maintained path.
The Boulders makes a rewarding day trip from Cairns or a worthwhile stop on a drive to or from the Atherton Tablelands. The surrounding Wooroonooran National Park contains some of the highest peaks in Queensland, and the area receives some of the highest rainfall on the continent, feeding the lush scenery that makes the site so photogenic.
