House of Anvers
Belgian chocolate in historic gardens
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
House of Anvers is Tasmania's pre-eminent artisan chocolate destination, founded in 1989 by Belgian-born chocolatier Igor van Gerwen and set within 2.2 hectares of mature gardens at historic Wyndarra Lodge on the Bass Highway near Latrobe. Visitors can watch skilled confectioners hand-temper, mould, and enrobe truffles, pralines, fudges, and bars through the factory viewing windows, all at no charge. A cafe, chocolate museum, and well-stocked shop complete the experience.
The factory floor at House of Anvers operates every day of the week, and the viewing gallery allows visitors to observe the full chocolate-making process from tempering through to finished product. The on-site museum traces the history of chocolate from its Mesoamerican origins to the European artisan tradition that van Gerwen brought to Tasmania. The grounds include old-growth trees sourced from across the globe, providing a shaded and peaceful setting that sets Anvers apart from a typical chocolate shop or factory outlet.
The cafe at House of Anvers serves an extensive menu anchored by chocolate in its many forms, including hot chocolate in multiple flavour variants, chocolate desserts, and a full food menu for breakfast and lunch. The property is open from 7am every day, making it a popular early stop for travellers arriving on the overnight Spirit of Tasmania ferry who want a proper breakfast before heading south. Latrobe is approximately 10 kilometres south-east of Devonport via the Bass Highway, and the property is clearly signed from the main road. Entry to the factory viewing gallery and museum is free, with no booking required for individual visitors.
