Longreach Historic Railway Station

The current station building was completed in 1916, replacing earlier structures from the line's 1892 opening. Its wide verandas, decorative fretwork, and corrugated-iron roofing are classic examples of Queensland public architecture adapted for the harsh outback climate, and the building has changed little in the century since it was constructed.

Twice a week the Spirit of the Outback rolls in after a long journey from Brisbane, making this platform one of the most atmospheric arrival points in Australia. Even without a train in sight, the station precinct is worth exploring for its heritage signage, period waiting rooms, and the sense of connection to the wool-and-cattle economy that drove rail construction deep into central Queensland in the late nineteenth century.
