Mengler Hill Lookout and Sculpture Park
Barossa from above
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Perched at 396 metres above sea level on the eastern ridge of the Barossa Valley, Mengler Hill Lookout delivers one of the most sweeping panoramas in South Australia. On a clear day the patchwork of vineyards, towns, and distant ranges stretches in every direction, and a free-to-visit sculpture park featuring sixteen stone works from the 1988 Barossa International Sculpture Symposium lines the walking trail below the viewpoint.
The lookout sits at the end of a sealed road through Vine Vale and Bethany, with a small car park and picnic tables at the summit. The view west across the Barossa floor is the classic one, row after row of vines giving way to the township rooftops of Tanunda and Nuriootpa, while north and south the valley walls fold into eucalypt scrub.
The sculpture trail adds a cultural layer to what is otherwise a natural viewpoint. Sixteen large-scale works in local marble, granite, and stone were created by sculptors from twelve countries during the 1988 symposium and have remained in situ ever since, weathering gracefully into the landscape. The short loop trail connecting them is suitable for all fitness levels.
Sunrise and late afternoon are the best times to visit. The low-angle light turns the valley gold and makes the sculptures cast long shadows, a favourite subject for photographers. Entry is free, the site is unfenced, and it is accessible year-round.
