The southern edge of the UNESCO-listed Daintree Rainforest and the gateway to an indigenous-owned cultural precinct. Mossman Gorge lets visitors walk through 135 million year old rainforest with a Kuku Yalanji indigenous guide, in one of the most accessible parts of the oldest continuous rainforest on earth.

Mossman Gorge sits at the southern end of the Daintree Rainforest in far north Queensland, about 90 minutes drive north of Cairns, on the traditional lands of the Eastern Kuku Yalanji people. The gorge itself is a stretch of the Mossman River where it emerges from the Daintree and cuts through granite boulders on its way to the Coral Sea. The entire area is part of the UNESCO Wet Tropics of Queensland World Heritage listing.

The Mossman Gorge Centre at the entrance to the national park is a purpose-built indigenous-owned visitor facility that opened in 2012 and is the standard starting point for any visit. It is operated by the Kuku Yalanji people in partnership with the federal government and houses a gallery of local indigenous art, a restaurant serving bush-food-inspired meals, and the departure point for the award-winning Ngadiku Dreamtime Walk cultural experiences.

The Ngadiku Dreamtime Walk is the single best indigenous tourism experience in north Queensland. It is led by Kuku Yalanji guides through the rainforest trails, and includes a smoking ceremony welcome, demonstrations of bush medicines and traditional food sources, storytelling about the forest's creation, and a traditional billy tea afterwards. The walk lasts about 90 minutes and runs several times a day. Pre-booking is strongly recommended in peak season.

For visitors who prefer to explore independently, the Mossman Gorge Rainforest Circuit Track is a 2.4 kilometre loop that starts from the Mossman Gorge Centre and descends through the rainforest to the gorge. It is accessible year-round and takes about 45 minutes at a relaxed pace. A shorter 400 metre loop connects to a suspension bridge over the river with views of the gorge itself. The freshwater pools at the base of the gorge are popular for swimming in the dry season (May to October), though the water is always cold.

The rainforest at Mossman Gorge contains plants descended from the supercontinent of Gondwana and is considered one of the oldest continuously surviving rainforest ecosystems on earth, with direct botanical lineage going back around 135 million years. The canopy reaches 40 metres in places and contains species including Alexandra palms, lawyer canes, fan palms and strangler figs. Visitors frequently see Boyd's forest dragons (a small arboreal lizard), ulysses butterflies, and occasional sightings of the southern cassowary.

The Mossman township, 5 minutes east of the gorge, is a small sugar cane farming town with a weekly market. Port Douglas, 20 minutes south-east, is the main accommodation base for most visitors and runs day trips to Mossman Gorge as part of Daintree rainforest tours. From Mossman Gorge, visitors can continue north to the Daintree River ferry crossing and into the deeper rainforest at Cape Tribulation.

Mossman Gorge is a year-round destination but best visited in the dry season (May to October) when the humidity drops, creek crossings are safer, and the swimming in the river is genuinely pleasant. Wet season (November to April) brings torrential rain and warmer temperatures. The closest airport is Cairns International Airport (CNS), about 90 minutes drive south.
