Nerada Tea Visitor Centre
Australia's largest tea plantation
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Nerada Tea grows on a 360-hectare estate in the hills near Malanda, producing the vast majority of Australia's domestically grown tea. The visitor centre lets you explore the plantation, watch the factory in operation, taste freshly brewed varieties, and spot Lumholtz's tree kangaroos that have taken up residence among the tea rows, an only-in-Australia experience.
The plantation was established in the 1960s and now supplies supermarkets across the country with black tea grown and processed entirely in tropical Far North Queensland. Visiting the estate gives a clear picture of how the tea crop is managed through Queensland's wet and dry seasons, and the factory viewing area explains each stage of production from leaf plucking through to the familiar tea bag.
The visitor centre includes a tearoom where you can enjoy Devonshire tea or a tasting flight of different brews alongside views over the neat rows of tea bushes. The estate is also one of the most reliable spots on the Tablelands to see tree kangaroos, which forage in the plantation in the early morning and late afternoon.
The visitor centre is open Wednesday to Sunday. General entry and the plantation shop are free. High tea and tasting flights are available for a small additional charge, and bookings are recommended for high tea on weekends.
