Stanthorpe Regional Art Gallery is the cultural heart of the Granite Belt, presenting a rolling programme of contemporary and regional exhibitions in a purpose-built gallery set within the green expanse of Weeroona Park. Admission is free and the gallery is open six days a week, making it an accessible highlight for visitors of all ages. The gallery is also the home of the biennial Stanthorpe Art Prize, one of regional Queensland's most prestigious acquisitive art awards.
The gallery occupies a lovely parkland position at the corner of Marsh and Lock Streets in central Stanthorpe, with Weeroona Park's lawns and mature trees providing a tranquil setting for a cultural visit. The exhibition programme spans painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, and mixed media, with a strong focus on artists connected to the Darling Downs, the Granite Belt, and broader Queensland. The permanent collection reflects the region's creative heritage.
The Stanthorpe Art Prize, held every two years, draws entries from across the country and has helped launch and sustain careers for a generation of Australian artists. The acquisitive prize adds winning works to the permanent collection, meaning the gallery grows richer with each instalment. Visiting during a prize exhibition period offers a particularly vibrant snapshot of contemporary Australian art practice.
The gallery shop stocks locally made prints, ceramics, jewellery, and art books, all ideal Granite Belt souvenirs. For families, the gallery regularly runs school holiday programmes and community workshops. With free admission and a central location, it slots easily into any Stanthorpe itinerary alongside the Big Thermometer (a short stroll away) and the town's cafes and providores.
