A state-by-state guide to Australia's best V8 hot lap and supercar drive experiences - covering top circuits, price ranges, what to expect, and which experience suits you.
Australia is one of the few countries on earth where you can turn up to a world-class motorsport circuit on a Saturday morning, suit up in a race suit, and be hammering through a corner in a 500-plus horsepower V8 Supercar before lunch. Whether you want to ride shotgun while a professional driver demonstrates exactly what "grip limit" means, or you want to take the wheel yourself with an instructor in your ear, there has never been more variety on offer. This guide breaks it down state by state so you can find the right experience for your budget and your nerve.

Hot Laps vs Drive Days - What Is the Difference?
Before you book anything, understand the two core formats.
Hot laps are a passenger experience. You buckle into the co-driver seat alongside a professional racing driver who then proceeds to show you, in no uncertain terms, what the car can actually do. Sessions are typically two to six laps and are over in under ten minutes. Hot laps are ideal for people who want maximum adrenaline with zero prerequisites beyond a working stomach. Prices start from around $150-$250 for a two-lap entry package.
Drive days put you in the driver's seat. After a safety briefing and some theory on braking points, apexes, and racecraft, you take the wheel with a professional coach guiding you via in-car intercom. Expect to invest around three hours of your day once you factor in sign-on, suiting up, the briefing, and your actual laps. A four-to-six lap drive package typically starts from around $390-$500. Longer sessions of eight to twenty laps push prices toward $600-$1,600. Drive days require at minimum a provisional licence, and most operators set a maximum weight of 130 kg and height of 194 cm.
Many operators offer a combo - a block of drive laps followed by a hot lap with the pro - and this is often the best value for a first-timer who wants both perspectives.
New South Wales - Sydney Motorsport Park and Colo Heights
Sydney Motorsport Park (formerly Eastern Creek, around 40 km west of Sydney) is the most accessible major circuit in the country and the busiest for public driving experiences. Fastrack Experiences operates a large calendar of V8 days here on the 1.8 km South Circuit - a punchy, technical loop with a good mix of corners and the famous Corporate Hill. Entry-level hot lap packages (two laps, ride only) start from around $249. Drive packages range from four laps (from around $399) up to a full 20-lap "The Legend" session at the top of the price scale. The NextGen Mustang is available alongside classic Holden and Ford V8 machinery, and automatic transmission options make the experience accessible for drivers without a manual licence. Check the events calendar - sessions run roughly monthly across the year.
Colo Heights in the Hawkesbury, about 90 minutes from Sydney, is a completely different proposition. Rally School Australia operates on a purpose-built gravel stage through the national park, and their Subaru WRX STi and Mitsubishi Lancer Evo cars are proper Australian Rally Championship machines. An eight-lap drive plus one hot lap starts from around $250-$280, while a two-car 16-lap combo (drive each car for eight laps plus a hot lap) runs from around $395. This is the pick for anyone who prefers sliding sideways through hairpins over circuit precision. Wear long pants and enclosed shoes, and expect to get dusty.
Victoria - Phillip Island and Sandown
Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit is probably the most cinematic venue on this list - a 4.45 km coastal circuit with the infamous Turn One drop and Southern Ocean views. Hot lap experiences here put you in the passenger seat of a high-performance machine for laps around a track that hosts the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix. Contact the circuit directly for current pricing and schedule, as availability is tied to non-race-event dates. The setting alone justifies the trip.
Sandown Raceway in Melbourne's south-eastern suburbs is the most convenient option for city-based Victorians. Fastrack and Adrenaline both operate V8 days here. A four-lap drive starts from around $399, a six-lap drive from around $499, and combo packages pairing driving laps with hot laps climb from around $599-$850. The 3.2 km circuit is fast enough to be properly exciting but forgiving enough that a first-timer can find their feet without intimidation.
Avalon (near Geelong) hosts a dedicated speedway and raceway facility with V8 buggy and rally car experiences available, offering a rougher-edged alternative to circuit driving. A buggy drive and hot lap combo runs from around $329.
Queensland - Norwell Motorplex and Queensland Raceway
Norwell Motorplex is a purpose-built, 2.1 km driver training facility located 35 minutes from Brisbane Airport and 25 minutes from Surfers Paradise, making it the logical Gold Coast choice. The bidirectional bitumen circuit is used specifically for experience days, which keeps things orderly and safe. A three-lap hot lap (passenger only) starts from $250. Drive packages run from $290 for five laps, $390 for seven laps, and $720 for a ten-lap drive plus two hot laps. Add-on in-car video, telemetry, and lap times are available for around $45 extra - good value if you plan to review your lines afterwards. The Supercars Official Driving Experience also operates here, meaning the cars are prepared by the same engineers who work on professional race machinery.
Queensland Raceway at Willowbank, Ipswich (about 45 minutes from Brisbane), is a 3.126 km FIA Grade 3 circuit - the paperclip shape is deceptively challenging. The facility runs its own V8 Race Experience program with purpose-built Mustang race cars producing well over 500 hp on Dunlop Supersoft slick tyres. Seven-lap drive packages start from around $299, with hot lap add-ons from around $99. It is a genuine bargain for the quality of car and track on offer.
South Australia - The Bend, Tailem Bend
Shell V-Power Motorsport Park at The Bend near Tailem Bend, about 100 km from Adelaide, is arguably Australia's most impressive modern motorsport facility. Its GT Circuit is 7.77 km in length - the longest permanent road course in the Southern Hemisphere. Driving experiences here run on a shorter circuit configuration and include V8 Holden and V8 Mustang options for both driver and passenger formats, as well as a Subaru Rally Car for those who want to go sideways on gravel. Porsche GT3 Cup hot laps are also on the menu for something more exotic. Gift vouchers start from $25, with full experience pricing available directly from the venue. The sheer scale and quality of the facility makes this a destination experience - pair it with a Barossa Valley visit and you have a very good long weekend.
Western Australia - Barbagallo Wanneroo Raceway
Barbagallo Wanneroo Raceway (officially Wanneroo Raceway), located in Neerabup about 40 minutes north of Perth CBD, is Western Australia's primary venue for V8 experiences. The 2.4 km circuit has hosted V8 Supercars Championship rounds and provides a genuine racetrack environment. Multiple operators run V8 drive days and hot lap experiences here. Drive packages including ride-alongs can start from around $300-$380, with 10-11 lap extended drives pushing toward $400-$500. Perth's mild autumn and spring months (April-May and September-October) are ideal for track days, when temperatures are comfortable and grip levels are consistent.
Things to Know Before You Book
Licence requirements. You need at minimum a provisional (P-plate) licence to drive. Bring a physical or digital copy on the day.
Physical limits. Most operators cap participants at 130 kg body weight and a height range of roughly 135-194 cm. This is about the safety harness and roll cage, not fitness level.
Lap count matters. Two-lap hot lap packages are fast but fleeting - customer satisfaction is generally much higher from six laps upward. If budget allows, go longer.
Weather and cancellations. Wet weather affects grip but most circuit days still run. Gravel rally experiences at Colo Heights operate rain or shine. Check each operator's cancellation policy.
Gift vouchers. Most operators issue vouchers valid for two to three years, making these a solid gift option with flexible redemption. Book the voucher now, schedule the date later.
What to wear. Closed-toe flat-soled shoes and comfortable clothes that fit under a race suit. Most venues provide the suit, helmet, and gloves. Leave jewellery at home and tie back long hair.
Add-ons worth considering. In-car video and lap timing are offered at most venues for a small surcharge. Watching yourself tackle a corner from outside and onboard simultaneously is one of the better ways to actually improve - and it makes for excellent footage.
Whether you are after a ten-minute white-knuckle passenger ride at Phillip Island or a full morning behind the wheel at Queensland Raceway, Australia's motorsport experience scene is mature, well-run, and genuinely thrilling. Pick your state, pick your circuit, and go fast.
