Ashcombe Maze and Lavender Gardens near Shoreham is home to Australia's oldest hedge maze, planted with more than 1,000 cypress trees across winding pathways that have been baffling visitors since 1981. Set across 25 acres of rolling hinterland gardens, the property also features a year-round flowering lavender labyrinth, rose maze, and stunning arboretum.

The traditional hedge maze is the centrepiece of the property, tall enough to disorient even experienced visitors and satisfying enough to delight children who finally find the hidden fountain at the centre. The circular rose maze, shaped from thousands of standard roses, offers a softer challenge, while the lavender labyrinth is a sensory highlight that remains in bloom for most of the year.

Beyond the mazes, the gardens include a sculptured topiary walk, a wishing well, and a large gallery showcasing works by local and national artists. The on-site cafe serves lavender-infused food and beverages, and the gift shop stocks lavender products, seeds, and garden accessories. The property opens Thursday to Monday, making it ideal for a long-weekend escape from Melbourne.

Ashcombe is situated in the Red Hill wine and produce region of the peninsula, so a maze visit pairs naturally with winery lunches and farm gate shopping on nearby roads. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended as the grounds are extensive.
