Spread across the lower slopes of Black Mountain in Acton, the Australian National Botanic Gardens is the country's most comprehensive living collection of native Australian plants. Established in 1949 and managed by Parks Australia, the heritage-listed gardens cover 90 hectares and are free to enter, drawing walkers, botanists, and families year-round.

Highlights include the Rainforest Gully, a lush microclimate planted with species from Tasmania through to Queensland, complete with daily mistings and elevated boardwalks that weave through tree ferns and mosses. The Eucalypt Lawn showcases roughly one-fifth of all Australian eucalypt species, while the Aboriginal Plant Use Trail traces the deep relationship between Country and its First Peoples.

A well-stocked botanical bookshop, a cafe, and a free visitor centre with guided walk options make the gardens as much a day out as a scientific resource. Spring and autumn bring outstanding colour, though the gardens reward a visit in any season.
