Champagne Pools
Nature's ocean-side spa
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
The Champagne Pools are a series of natural rock pools hollowed from ancient volcanic rock on the north-eastern tip of K'gari, and they offer the only safe ocean swimming on the island's exposed eastern side. With every incoming wave, seawater surges over the rocky rim, aerating the pools with thousands of bubbles that give the site its name. The Butchulla people historically used the pools as fish traps.
The pools sit between Indian Head and Waddy Point, reached via a short boardwalk from the beach parking area. At mid-tide the experience is at its best, when waves are large enough to refresh the pools with foamy water, but not so powerful that swimming becomes hazardous. The shallow, protected basins make the site suitable for families, though the surrounding rocks can be slippery and require care.
No entry fee applies beyond the vehicle permit needed to access K'gari. There are no permanent facilities at the pools themselves, so visitors should carry food, water, and sun protection. Dingoes are regularly spotted on the surrounding beach, and the clifftops nearby offer elevated views out to sea.
