Coogee Beach
The relaxed end of Sydney's most famous coastal walk
On the lands of the Bidjigal people.
A wide, sheltered beach in Sydney's eastern suburbs that marks the southern end of the famous Bondi to Coogee coastal walk. Coogee has a more relaxed feel than its northern neighbour, with a grassy headland, two historic ocean pools and a family-friendly bay protected by Wedding Cake Island offshore.
Coogee Beach sits in a natural bay on Bidjigal country, sheltered by headlands on both sides and the small rocky outcrop of Wedding Cake Island a few hundred metres offshore. The beach faces south-east and picks up less of the direct southerly swell than Bondi, which makes it calmer and better suited to families with young children.
The Bondi to Coogee walk is Sydney's most popular coastal path, running six kilometres along the clifftops through Tamarama, Bronte, Clovelly and Gordon's Bay before arriving at Coogee. Most people walk it south to north to finish at Bondi, but starting at Coogee means you get the morning sun behind you and end with a swim at the more famous beach.
Coogee has two historic ocean pools. Wylie's Baths, built into the rocks on the southern headland in 1907, is a tidal pool that fills and drains with each tide cycle and charges a small entry fee. McIver's Ladies Baths, next door, is one of the last women-only ocean pools in Australia and has been operating since the early 1900s. The Giles Baths rock pool on the northern side is a free, rough-water bogey hole that gets waves washing over the edge on bigger swells.
The suburb behind the beach has a strong pub and cafe scene, with the Coogee Bay Hotel occupying prime position on the beachfront. Coogee Pavilion, a multi-level venue in a converted 1930s building, is a favourite for weekend brunch.
