Crystal Cascades
Rainforest swimming holes
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Tucked into the foothills of the Lamb Range about 19 kilometres west of Cairns, Crystal Cascades is a series of freshwater swimming holes formed where Freshwater Creek tumbles over granite boulders. The setting, deep green pools beneath a closed canopy of tropical rainforest, makes it one of the most beautiful natural swimming spots in Far North Queensland and a genuine local favourite.
A paved, flat walking track runs 1.2 kilometres from the car park alongside the cascades, passing picnic areas and barbecue facilities before reaching the main falls viewing platform. The path is suitable for prams and wheelchairs for most of its length. Several pools of varying depths are accessible along the way, and the cold, clear water is a welcome relief on hot tropical days.
The site is managed by the Cairns Regional Council and entry is free. Facilities include change rooms, toilets, a drinking fountain, sheltered picnic tables, and coin-operated barbecues. The area is popular on weekends and school holidays, so an early morning arrival is recommended for a quieter experience.
Crystal Cascades sits within the wet tropics landscape and is surrounded by World Heritage listed rainforest. It is open every day of the year, though access may be affected after very heavy rainfall when creek levels rise.
