Crystal Caves
World-class minerals underground
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Crystal Caves in central Atherton houses one of the world's finest private collections of minerals, crystals, and gemstones, displayed across a series of recreated underground cave environments. More than 600 specimens are on show, including a 3.5-tonne amethyst cathedral, and the immersive lighting and sound design create a genuinely spectacular experience for visitors of all ages.
The collection was assembled over decades and includes specimens sourced from more than 50 countries. The highlight is the cathedral amethyst, a towering geode of deep purple crystal that visitors walk into, but the collection spans everything from fluorescent minerals and meteorite fragments to rare crystal formations found in only a handful of locations on earth.
The self-guided tour takes approximately 90 minutes to two hours to complete fully and is suitable for all ages and mobility levels. Visitors are given an audio guide and a printed guide sheet, and staff are on hand throughout the experience to answer questions. The venue also houses a fossil and gemstone shop and a small cafe.
Crystal Caves is located at 69 Main Street in the centre of Atherton and is open seven days a week from 9am to 5pm, with last entry at 4pm. It is closed on several public holidays including Christmas Day, Boxing Day and Good Friday.
