Emu Valley Rhododendron Garden
Eleven hectares of Himalayan-scale blooms
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Set eight kilometres south of Burnie off the Ridgley Highway, the Emu Valley Rhododendron Garden is a privately owned eleven-hectare woodland garden dedicated to conserving the Rhododendron genus - one of the world's largest plant genera. More than 24,000 rhododendrons and companion plants from across the globe create a spectacular display from late August through November, with vivid autumn foliage painting the garden from March to May. The garden also shelters a platypus sanctuary, lakes, and a resident population of native wildlife.
The garden was established with the dual mission of public enjoyment and scientific conservation, and today it grows more than 500 of the approximately 1,000 known rhododendron species - a living collection of global significance. Winding paths lead visitors through canopied woodland walks, past reflective lakes and rocky outcrops, with the surrounding Emu Valley framing every view. The Rosetree Cafe on site serves light refreshments and hearty lunches, making a half-day visit comfortable.
Entry fees support the garden's ongoing conservation work and plant propagation programme. Children are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. The garden is open daily and is well signposted from Burnie's city centre; from Mount Street, take the Ridgley Highway (B18) south and turn east onto Cascade Road, then follow signs to Breffny Road.
