Fern Glade Reserve
Wild platypus on a city-edge river
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Less than four kilometres from Burnie's city centre, Fern Glade Reserve is a tranquil river valley where ancient tree ferns arch over the Emu River and wild platypus regularly surface along the banks. Listed as one of Tasmania's 60 Great Short Walks, the main trail is an easy 1.2-kilometre return suitable for all ages and abilities. The reserve opens at 7:30 am and closes at dusk daily, and entry is free.
The well-maintained walking track follows the Emu River through a lush fern understorey, with interactive display boards and QR codes linking to video footage of the resident platypus population. Dawn and dusk are the best times for platypus sightings - visitors are asked to move quietly and avoid shining lights near the water. Orchids, native birds, and occasional echidnas add further wildlife interest throughout the year.
The reserve features electric barbecues, picnic tables, and toilet facilities at the Fernglade Road carpark, making it a popular spot for family outings. Dogs, bicycles, and firearms are not permitted inside the reserve. Access is via Fernglade Road, turning left off Old Surrey Road from the Bass Highway on the eastern approach to Burnie.
