Flagstaff Hill Lookout
360-degree views above the peninsula
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Perched at the summit of the Port Douglas peninsula, Flagstaff Hill Lookout rewards a short walk or drive with sweeping panoramas across Four Mile Beach, the Coral Sea, the Low Isles, Snapper Island, and the jungle-covered ranges of the Daintree hinterland. The site is one of the most photographed vantage points in Far North Queensland and is equally spectacular at sunrise, sunset, and on clear blue-sky days.
The hill takes its name from its colonial-era role as a signal station, where ships were guided into the harbour using flags hoisted from the summit. Today an Anzac War Memorial stands at the top, dedicated to the local soldiers who served in the First World War, and a viewing platform provides protected outlooks in multiple directions.
The Flagstaff Hill Walking Trail connects the lookout to Four Mile Beach at one end and Rex Smeal Park at the other, forming a pleasant loop around the peninsula. The main track is wide and suitable for most fitness levels; the steeper lookout link section is short but worth the modest effort for the views.
No facilities are located at the summit itself, but the site is free to visit at any hour. The access road leads off Island Point Road and parking is available near the base of the hill.
