Four Mile Beach
Golden sands meet the Coral Sea
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Stretching four kilometres of pale golden sand just steps from the centre of Port Douglas, Four Mile Beach is one of tropical Queensland's most celebrated stretches of coastline. Patrolled by lifeguards year-round and fitted with stinger nets during summer, the beach offers safe swimming alongside stand-up paddleboarding, kitesurfing, and long morning walks with views across the Coral Sea to the rainforest-clad ranges.
The beach runs roughly north to south along the eastern edge of the Port Douglas peninsula, with its southern end anchored by a shady park and its northern end merging into quiet natural foreshore. The consistent south-east trade winds make it a favourite with kitesurfers, while calmer mornings suit families and casual swimmers.
Palm-lined paths parallel the sand, and the absence of heavy development along the beachfront keeps the setting genuinely wild. Sunrise here is a ritual for visitors and locals alike, the light arrives over the Coral Sea in bands of orange and pink before the day heats up.
There are no entry fees and no facilities beyond the patrolled swimming enclosure and basic amenities at the southern end. Dogs are welcome in designated off-leash sections. The beach is easily reached on foot from Macrossan Street in under five minutes.
