Frenchman Peak
Summit views above the coast
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Frenchman Peak is the most striking landmark in Cape Le Grand National Park, a granite monolith rising 262 metres above the coastal plain roughly 45 minutes' drive east of Esperance. A 3-kilometre return trail climbs steeply to a natural cave near the summit and then to panoramic views across the archipelago, the white beaches below and the Southern Ocean stretching to the horizon.
The trail is steep and involves exposed granite slabs, rock cairns and sections of scrambling on all fours. The surface is grippy when dry but the park advises against attempting the climb in wet or windy weather. Most walkers allow two hours return and are rewarded at the top with one of the most expansive coastal views in Western Australia.
About two-thirds of the way up, a large wave-sculpted cave opens in the rock face. Scientists believe it was formed when sea levels were far higher, and it now sits roughly 200 metres above the shore. Ducking inside and looking out over the park is a highlight of the climb in its own right.
The trailhead is signposted from the main park road and has a small gravel car park. Visitors should bring water, sturdy footwear and sun protection. The park entry fee covers access to Frenchman Peak as well as Lucky Bay and the other park beaches.
