Gordon River Cruise
Into the Tasmanian wilderness
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Departing Strahan's main wharf each morning, the Gordon River Cruise carries passengers deep into the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area aboard the Spirit of the Wild. The journey glides through Hells Gates and Macquarie Harbour before pushing up the mirror-still Gordon River, stopping at Heritage Landing rainforest and the convict ruins of Sarah Island.
The Spirit of the Wild uses a hybrid-electric drive system that lets the vessel slip silently along the tannin-dark river, giving passengers an almost unreal sense of immersion in one of the most intact temperate rainforests on earth. Onboard guides draw on historical characters to bring the frontier era alive, while the buffet lunch showcases fresh Tasmanian produce.
Two guided walking experiences are included. At Heritage Landing a short boardwalk leads into ancient Huon pine forest, and at Sarah Island the ruins of the colonial penal settlement tell a darker chapter of Australian history. Both stops are paced for walkers of all abilities.
Check-in is at 8:00am with an 8:30am departure; the cruise returns to Strahan in the early afternoon. Carriage choice ranges from standard main-deck seating to a premium upper-deck with wider views and dedicated service.
