Humbug Point Nature Recreation Area
Family camping on Georges Bay
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Humbug Point Nature Recreation Area sits on the southern shore of Georges Bay between St Helens and Binalong Bay, offering free camping, boat launching, swimming, and birdwatching in a relaxed coastal bush setting. Managed by the Parks and Wildlife Service Tasmania, the reserve is dog-friendly on leads and suits families, anglers, and kayakers. The Dora Point campground within the reserve provides toilets, showers, and direct water access.
The reserve encompasses a generous stretch of bay frontage with calm, sheltered water ideal for launching small boats and kayaks, paddleboarding, and swimming. Fishing from the shore or by boat is popular throughout the year, with Australian salmon, bream, and flathead among the target species. Birdwatchers will find oystercatchers, cormorants, herons, and an array of bush birds in the surrounding coastal scrub and wetland fringes.
Camping at Dora Point campground is free with no booking required, and the sites accommodate tents, caravans, and campervans. Cold showers and toilets are provided. A short signed loop walk through the reserve links the camping areas and gives elevated views over Georges Bay. The reserve is reached by turning off Binalong Bay Road onto Dora Point Road, approximately 10 km north of St Helens.
