Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve
Rainforest above the Glass House Mountains
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve protects 55 hectares of subtropical rainforest on the Blackall Range at Maleny, with sweeping views over the Glass House Mountains that rival anything in South East Queensland. Managed by Sunshine Coast Council, the reserve is open daily and entry is free, making it one of the region's most rewarding and accessible natural attractions.
A network of boardwalk and bush tracks winds through the heart of the rainforest, where ancient trees, ferns and wildlife including pademelons, brush turkeys and a rich variety of birds can be observed at close range. The Rainforest Discovery Centre opens each morning with interactive displays about the reserve's ecology, and knowledgeable staff and volunteers are regularly on hand.
The reserve is particularly beautiful in the morning, when mist rolls across the Glass House Mountains and birdlife is most active. A cafe adjacent to the car park serves coffee and light meals. Rainforest walks are open from 7am to 6pm daily, though the Discovery Centre is closed on public holidays.
