Mount Morgan Historic Gold Mine Town
Gold rush heritage, open cut wonder

Perched in the ranges 38 kilometres south-west of Rockhampton, Mount Morgan is one of Queensland's most historically significant towns, built around what was once the richest gold mine in the world. Between 1882 and 1981 the mine yielded roughly 262 tonnes of gold, 37 tonnes of silver, and 387,000 tonnes of copper, wealth that helped fund the oil exploration that eventually became BP.
Guided mine tours run twice daily and take around two hours. The route passes through surviving mine buildings, up to the edge of the vast open-cut pit, and into man-made caverns where dinosaur footprints left in ancient rock have been preserved. Every tour concludes with a complimentary Devonshire tea.
Beyond the mine, the Mount Morgan Historical Museum houses an extensive collection of photographs, machinery, and artefacts tracing the town's remarkable boom years. The former railway station, a 19th-century suspension bridge, a clifftop lookout, and historic statues are all within easy walking distance in this compact heritage town. Entry to the museum is by a small donation.
