Rockhampton

The beef capital of Australia, straddling the Tropic of Capricorn

A city of around 80,000 people on the Fitzroy River, straddling the Tropic of Capricorn and known as the beef capital of Australia. Rockhampton is surrounded by vast cattle country and serves as the inland gateway to the Capricorn Coast beaches and Great Keppel Island.

Rockhampton sits on the banks of the Fitzroy River in central Queensland, roughly 600 kilometres north of Brisbane. The Tropic of Capricorn passes directly through the city, marked by a spire on the southern approach, making it one of only a handful of cities in the world to straddle this geographic line. The surrounding pastoral land supports around 2.5 million head of cattle, and the city has long claimed the title of beef capital of Australia.

The Rockhampton Heritage Village on the northern edge of town is a restored collection of original and relocated buildings from the region's pastoral and mining history. It includes a slab-timber homestead, a blacksmith shop, a one-room school and a functioning steam locomotive. The Dreamtime Cultural Centre, also on the northern approach, is one of the oldest Aboriginal cultural centres in Queensland and offers guided tours, boomerang throwing and didgeridoo demonstrations.

The Fitzroy River, which flows through the centre of the city, is one of the largest river systems draining into the Coral Sea. The Riverside Precinct has been significantly upgraded in recent years with a boardwalk, parklands and public art. Bull statues are scattered throughout the CBD as a nod to the cattle industry, and the annual Beef Australia Expo (held every three years) is the largest beef industry event in the southern hemisphere.

Rockhampton is the inland gateway to the Capricorn Coast, a stretch of beaches and islands centred on Yeppoon (40 minutes east) and Great Keppel Island (a short ferry from Yeppoon). The Capricorn Caves, 23 kilometres north of the city, are an extensive limestone cave system with guided tours and a famous Cathedral Cave where a beam of natural light illuminates the interior around the summer solstice.

The city has a warm tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. Winter (June to August) is the most comfortable time for visiting, with daytime temperatures around 23 degrees and little rain. Summer can be hot and humid with occasional flooding of the Fitzroy River. Rockhampton Airport has direct flights from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.
