Murrays Beach
Sheltered bay, wild snorkelling
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Murrays Beach sits inside Booderee National Park and looks directly across to Bowen Island, home to one of the few mainland little penguin colonies on the NSW coast. The water is calm and brilliantly clear, making it one of the best snorkelling spots in the region. Eastern blue groper, luderick, bream, and rays are commonly seen just metres from shore.
The beach is sheltered by Bowen Island, so the surface is rarely rough, ideal for families with children and for casual snorkellers exploring the rocky edges at either end. A short bush track leads from the car park to the sand, passing through coastal scrub that kangaroos and wallabies frequent at dawn and dusk. There is no lifeguard patrol, so swimmers should exercise caution.
The Munyunga waraga dhugan loop walk starts near the beach and meanders through the national park, offering views back over the bay and a side trail to Governor Head lookout where information boards explain the Bowen Island penguin colony. Sunrise over the island is a favourite for photographers.
Entry to Murrays Beach is included in the Booderee National Park vehicle pass. Facilities include toilets and cold showers at the car park. No dogs are permitted anywhere in the park.
