Platypus House at Inspection Head Wharf in Beauty Point is one of the few places in the world where visitors can observe live platypuses and echidnas in a sheltered, indoor setting. Guided tours run throughout the day, giving you an unhurried look at two of Australia's most extraordinary monotremes. An on-site cafe with Tamar River views rounds out a memorable stop on the Tamar Valley touring route.
Opened on the historic Inspection Head Wharf, Platypus House has spent more than two decades hosting visitors who want a guaranteed encounter with the shy platypus, an animal notoriously difficult to spot in the wild. The facility houses resident platypuses in purpose-built tanks with carefully controlled lighting so that guests can watch them dive and forage at close quarters, with knowledgeable guides on hand to answer questions and share conservation stories.
Echidnas, Australia's other egg-laying mammal, share the spotlight and can often be handled under staff supervision, a highlight for younger visitors. The experience is genuinely educational without feeling like a lecture, and the small group format (tours cap at ten people) means everyone gets a prime view.
