Perched on the headland above the Rip at the entrance to Port Phillip Bay, Point Lonsdale Lighthouse has guided mariners since 1902 and remains an active navigational aid operated by Ports Victoria. On Sunday mornings, small guided groups are allowed to climb the 120 steps to the lantern room for panoramic views across Bass Strait, Port Phillip and back to the Mornington Peninsula. Tours are capped at eight people and must be booked in advance through the Queenscliffe Maritime Museum.

Each 30-minute tour is led by a qualified guide who covers the lighthouse's construction, its role in preventing Bass Strait shipwrecks, and the lives of the families who served as lighthouse keepers on this remote headland. The climb is rewarding but demanding - visitors must be fit enough for 120 steps and wear solid footwear. The tours are unsuitable for those with vertigo, claustrophobia or pacemakers due to the telecommunications equipment housed in the tower.

Tours run from 9:30am to 1:00pm (last entry 12:30pm) every Sunday from late spring through to late November, aligning with the daylight saving season when visibility from the top is at its best. The Point Lonsdale headland precinct also features the historic pilot lookout, a short coastal walking track and direct views of the dramatic tidal rush through the Rip. Parking is available on Point Lonsdale Road, and the village's cafes and fish-and-chip shops are a short stroll away.
