Qantas Founders Museum
Where Australian aviation was born
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Housed in the heritage-listed 1922 Qantas hangar at Longreach Airport, this museum traces the remarkable story of Australia's national airline from its outback Queensland origins to the modern jet age. Walk beneath a Boeing 747, step inside a Boeing 707, and discover how a handful of pioneers in central Queensland changed the way the world travels.
The museum sits on the same ground where Qantas first spread its wings after moving its operations from Winton to Longreach in the early 1920s. The centrepiece hangar dates to 1922 and is itself heritage-listed, giving the building as much historical weight as the aircraft it shelters. Highlights include a Douglas DC-3, a Lockheed Constellation, and the airline's first jet, a painstakingly restored Boeing 707.
Visitors can explore interactive galleries covering Qantas history, outback mail runs, wartime service, and the personalities who built the airline. The on-site cafe, gift shop, and guided tour options make this a comfortable half-day or full-day stop. A popular evening light-and-sound show projected across the Airpark adds a spectacular dimension for those who linger past sunset.
