Raymond Island in the Gippsland Lakes is home to around 200 wild koalas, making it one of the most reliable places in Victoria to encounter koalas in their natural habitat. A free 2-kilometre walking trail begins right at the ferry arrival point and loops through stands of manna gum and blue gum where koalas rest in the forks and high branches throughout the day.
Getting there is part of the experience. A free car ferry runs from the Paynesville foreshore to Raymond Island every 20 minutes, with foot passengers and cyclists travelling at no charge. The crossing takes only a minute or two, and the Koala Trail starts as soon as you step off the ramp. With over 35,000 visitors a year and around 200 koalas on the island, sightings are close to guaranteed even for short visits.
The trail is an easy, flat walk suitable for all ages and abilities, with three optional extra loops that extend the walk for those who want to explore further. An interpretive centre near the ferry landing provides background on the island's koala population and the broader Gippsland Lakes ecosystem. There are no shops on Raymond Island, so visitors are advised to bring water, food and sun protection.
The island is also home to a small residential community and a pleasant network of quiet roads suitable for cycling. Bike hire is available on the island during school holidays, and arriving by bicycle on the free ferry is a popular way to spend a morning.
