Operating from the original 1939 base on Stuart Terrace, the Royal Flying Doctor Service Tourist Facility tells the remarkable story of how a network of aircraft and radio technology brought medical care to the most remote corners of Australia. Interactive exhibits, a replica aircraft and a working operations room reveal the courage and ingenuity behind a service that remains active today.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service began operating from Alice Springs in 1939, and the Stuart Terrace building has been heritage-listed as the spiritual home of the Central Operations base. Visitors walk through restored offices, communication rooms and the original hangar area while guided audio and video presentations bring the early years to life.

The museum is well suited to short visits of around an hour, with clear signage and multimedia displays suitable for all ages. A highlight is the life-size replica aircraft that visitors can examine up close, alongside a display of the medical kits historically dispatched to remote station families.

A small on-site cafe operates during opening hours, and the facility regularly hosts special events tied to the history of remote medicine. The RFDS continues to fly from Alice Springs, so the connection between the historic exhibits and the living organisation is genuinely felt.
