Tasmania Loop in Seven Days

A clockwise loop from Hobart through Cradle Mountain, Wineglass Bay and the Tasman Peninsula.

The Trip

Seven days driving the iconic loop of Tasmania. Cradle Mountain, the Bay of Fires, Wineglass Bay, the Tasman Peninsula and the highlights of Hobart and Launceston.

Tasmania is small (about a quarter of the size of Victoria), but the driving is slow because the roads are winding and the scenery rewards stops. Seven days is the standard sweet spot for a first visit. You can do less if you skip Cradle Mountain, but for most visitors the western alpine country is the reason to come.

This itinerary is a clockwise loop starting and ending in Hobart. The most demanding driving is between Cradle Mountain and the east coast on day four, where the cross-island route can take five hours including stops. Plan to start the day early.

October through April is the best window. The weather is famously changeable so bring layers regardless of the season.
