The Great Ocean Road in Four Days

Melbourne to Adelaide along the southern coast, including the Twelve Apostles and Loch Ard Gorge.

The Trip

Four days from Melbourne to Adelaide along Australia's most photographed coast. Surf coast beaches, the Twelve Apostles at sunrise, the Otway rainforests and a long final stretch through the Coorong wetlands.

The Great Ocean Road is 243 kilometres of sealed coastal highway from Torquay west to Allansford, built between 1919 and 1932 by returned World War One soldiers as a memorial to those who died. It's a National Heritage listed road and one of the most scenic drives in the country.

Most travellers do the Great Ocean Road as a day trip from Melbourne, which is a mistake. The road is short but every section deserves time. This four day plan stretches it out, ends in Adelaide instead of looping back to Melbourne, and gives you the best windows on the Twelve Apostles (sunrise) and the Otway rainforest walks (mid-morning when the light slants through the canopy).

Drive in spring, autumn or even winter if you can. The summer school holidays are the only time the road feels crowded. The crossing at the South Australian border at Mount Gambier marks the start of the long final drive into Adelaide along the Coorong.

Day

01

Melbourne to Apollo Bay

explore Melbourne hotel Overnight in Apollo Bay directions_car 200 km drive
Melbourne

Leave Melbourne early via Geelong and join the Great Ocean Road at Torquay. Stop at Bells Beach (the Easter classic surf break), Anglesea, Aireys Inlet (the Split Point Lighthouse), and Lorne for lunch. The road from Lorne to Apollo Bay hugs the cliffs and is the most photographed section. Aim to be in Apollo Bay by late afternoon, with time for a beach walk before dinner.

Day

02

Otway Rainforest and the Twelve Apostles

Twelve Apostles

Spend the morning in the Great Otway National Park. The Maits Rest rainforest walk and the California Redwoods are both 30 minutes from Apollo Bay. Drive on to Cape Otway to climb the lighthouse, then turn west and start picking off the limestone coast: the Gibson Steps for the only access onto the beach below the cliffs, then the Twelve Apostles main viewing platform. Aim to arrive at the Apostles 90 minutes before sunset for the best light. Stay overnight in Port Campbell, the small fishing town five minutes from the main viewing area.

Day

03

Loch Ard Gorge and the long drive west

explore Loch Ard Gorge hotel Overnight in Mount Gambier directions_car 270 km drive
Loch Ard Gorge

Sunrise at the Twelve Apostles before the tour buses arrive, then drive to Loch Ard Gorge ten minutes further west. The gorge has a network of short walking tracks that take an hour to explore, including the cemetery for the Loch Ard shipwreck victims. Continue west past London Arch and the Bay of Islands, then leave the coast at Warrnambool and drive inland through Portland to cross the South Australian border at Mount Gambier. Spend the evening at the Blue Lake, which turns bright cobalt every November.

Day

04

Coorong drive into Adelaide

explore Adelaide hotel Overnight in Adelaide directions_car 530 km drive
Adelaide

The longest drive of the trip, 530 kilometres from Mount Gambier to Adelaide. The road runs through the Coorong, a 130 kilometre coastal lagoon system separated from the Southern Ocean by a thin strip of dunes (Younghusband Peninsula). Stop at Salt Creek and Meningie for breaks. The drive takes around six hours with stops, so plan a relaxed evening in Adelaide rather than trying to fit anything else in. The next morning is for the Central Market.
