The East Coast: Sydney to Cairns in 14 Days

Australia's east coast classic. Two weeks of beaches, surf towns, reef and rainforest from Sydney all the way to Cairns.

The Trip

Two weeks driving the east coast from Sydney to Cairns. Pacific beaches, Byron Bay, the Gold Coast, Brisbane, the Whitsundays and the Daintree, with the reef at the end.

The Sydney to Cairns drive is the most-travelled long-distance route in Australia. Two weeks is the minimum that lets you stop at the right places without having to drive eight hours every day. With three weeks you can also include the Hunter Valley, Fraser Island, and Magnetic Island as proper stops.

The Pacific Highway is sealed the entire way and most of it has been upgraded to dual carriageway in the last decade. The driving is easy. The challenge is that the distances add up: 2,400 kilometres in total, with a few long days. Build in a rest day in Byron and another in the Whitsundays.

Winter (May to September) is the best season for the northern half of the trip, when the tropical wet has finished and the weather is dry and warm. Summer is humid in the north and brings stinger season offshore. Either way, the southern half (Sydney to Brisbane) is comfortable year-round.
