The largest goldfields city in Victoria, founded in 1851 and the site of the 1854 Eureka Stockade rebellion that shaped Australian democracy. Sovereign Hill, an immersive 1850s gold rush living history museum, is one of the most-visited regional tourist attractions in the country.
Gold was first discovered at Ballarat in August 1851 and triggered one of the largest population movements in colonial history. The famous Welcome Stranger nugget, found nearby in 1869, weighed 71 kilograms and is still the largest single gold nugget ever discovered. By the late 1860s Ballarat was producing roughly a third of the world's gold supply.
The 1854 Eureka Stockade rebellion was a clash between gold miners protesting the cost of mining licences and the colonial government, and ended in a brief but bloody battle in which 27 people died. The Eureka Centre on the original site interprets the events. The flag flown by the rebels (the Southern Cross) became one of the lasting symbols of Australian democracy.
Sovereign Hill is the major modern draw. Built in the 1970s on the site of an actual former mine, it's a 25 hectare living history museum recreating Ballarat in 1854 with original buildings, costumed staff, working blacksmiths, gold panning, and the underground mine experience. The Blood on the Southern Cross sound and light show retells the Eureka story after dark.
The Art Gallery of Ballarat is the oldest and largest regional gallery in Australia, founded in 1884. The city is around 90 minutes by train or car from Melbourne.
