Spread across 1,747 square kilometres of central Victoria, the Macedon Ranges is a mosaic of ancient volcanic formations, cool-climate vineyards, heritage gardens and nine distinct country villages - all within roughly an hour's drive north-west of Melbourne. The region rises to 1,011 metres at Mount Macedon's Camel's Hump, producing the altitude and crisp air that make it one of Australia's coolest mainland wine-growing areas. From the eerie silhouette of Hanging Rock to the wisteria-draped estates of Mount Macedon, this is a region that rewards slow, curious travel.

The Dja Dja Wurrung, Taungurung and Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung peoples have maintained a continuous presence on this Country for at least 26,000 years. Culturally significant sites are woven through the landscape - none more so than Hanging Rock, known to Aboriginal people as Ngannelong, a mamelon formation that pushed up through the earth roughly 6.25 million years ago. Its twisted columns of lava and shadowed crevices carry deep spiritual meaning for Traditional Custodians, and the site's power endures long past the Gothic imaginings that Peter Weir's 1975 film cast over it.\n\nThe region's food and wine scene has grown into one of regional Victoria's most compelling. Vineyard altitudes ranging from 300 to 800 metres produce conditions ideal for elegantly structured chardonnay, pinot noir and sparkling wine made by the traditional method. Hanging Rock Winery, established in 1983, pioneered cool-climate sparkling in Australia and remains a benchmark producer. Cellar doors across the shire - from Lyons Will Estate to Hunter-Gatherer Vintners - pair tasting plates of local produce with views over vine rows and forested ridges. Each April the month-long Macedon Ranges Autumn Festival fills the villages with mushroom foraging, open garden trails and food-and-drink events timed perfectly to the blaze of deciduous colour.\n\nMount Macedon itself is a destination for gardeners and walkers alike. The mountain's cool, moist flanks support grand private estates planted in the 19th century with rhododendrons, magnolias and English oaks that put on spectacular displays in autumn and spring. The sealed path to the Memorial Cross - a tribute to the fallen of both World Wars - suits walkers of all fitness levels and delivers sweeping views across the plains toward Melbourne. Harder trails push through Macedon Regional Park and the Wombat State Forest, where towering mountain ash and manna gum canopies shelter wallabies, echidnas and over 200 recorded bird species.\n\nThe villages themselves are worth unhurried exploration. Kyneton's basalt-lined Piper Street has some of Victoria's most intact 1850s gold-rush commercial architecture, now home to acclaimed restaurants, providores and antique dealers. Woodend serves as the gateway town to Hanging Rock, with a relaxed main street and easy rail access from Melbourne. Romsey, Lancefield and Hesket offer quieter country pubs and farm-gate stalls. Artists and makers are embedded throughout - the Macedon Ranges has, per capita, more working artists than anywhere else in Victoria, with studios and galleries tucked into old mechanics institutes and converted woolsheds. A weekend is the minimum to do the region justice; longer stays reward those who want to linger over cellar doors, walking trails and roadside markets.
