A perfectly preserved 19th-century gold rush town in the Victorian High Country, famous for its heritage architecture, the Ned Kelly story, and a small but ambitious food and wine scene. Beechworth is on the National Trust heritage register and has one of the largest collections of gold-rush-era buildings in Australia.

Beechworth sits in the foothills of the Victorian Alps in north-east Victoria, on the traditional lands of the Dhudhuroa people. Gold was discovered here in 1852 and the town grew rapidly during the Victorian gold rush, at one stage becoming the most important town in the Ovens goldfield and the administrative centre of the entire north-east region. When the easily accessible alluvial gold ran out in the 1870s, the town declined steadily as miners moved on, but that economic slump preserved its 19th-century buildings almost completely intact.

The entire town is National Trust heritage listed and is considered one of the best-preserved gold rush towns in Australia. The main streets, Ford Street and Camp Street, are lined with granite and sandstone buildings from the 1850s to the 1880s, including the Beechworth Courthouse (where Ned Kelly was famously committed for trial in 1880), the Burke Museum (housed in the old Athenaeum), the Beechworth Honey showroom in an 1868 bank, and the intact stone post office and telegraph station.

Ned Kelly, Australia's most famous bushranger and cultural icon, has deep historical ties to Beechworth. His father John Kelly is buried here, his family lived nearby in the Glenrowan area, and the surviving Beechworth Courthouse is where many of his family's court cases were heard. The annual Ned Kelly Weekend in May includes re-enactments, walking tours and talks. The Burke Museum has an extensive Kelly-family exhibition.

The town's food and wine scene punches well above its weight for a population of around 3,000. Beechworth Bakery, Provenance Restaurant, and the new-wave distillery scene centred on Beechworth Honey have all built national reputations. The Beechworth Gin Festival and the Celtic Festival are annual events that draw crowds from across Victoria.

Beyond the town, the surrounding area is geologically interesting and has been reshaped by a century of hydraulic gold mining. The Historic Park on the edge of town has walking tracks past abandoned mining sites, water races and the eroded landscapes left behind. The old Gorge Scenic Drive is a short one-way loop through the granite country above the town with multiple lookouts over the valley.

The Murray to Mountains Rail Trail passes through Beechworth as part of its 116 kilometre route from Wangaratta to Bright. The section between Beechworth and Bright is the most popular day ride on the trail. Nearby is the historic village of Yackandandah (45 minutes away) which preserves another authentic gold rush main street.

The surrounding wine regions of Rutherglen (famous for fortified and muscat wines) and the King Valley (Italian varietals) are both under an hour away. The Victorian High Country ski fields, Bright and the Murray River are all within easy day-trip distance.

Beechworth is a year-round destination. Autumn (April to May) is the signature season when the liquidambars and chestnuts colour. Winter is cold and often frosty but quiet. Summer is warm but bushfire-prone. Spring brings the wildflowers and the start of the cycling season. The closest airport is Albury (ABX), 45 minutes away, with flights from Sydney and Melbourne.
