The closest major ski resort to Melbourne, three hours north-east in the Victorian High Country. Mount Buller has 22 lifts, 80 runs, and is the only Australian resort where a beginner lift runs right into the village.
Mount Buller is the closest Alpine resort to Melbourne and sits at 1,805 metres on the northern edge of the Great Dividing Range. The mountain gets reliable snow from mid-June to late September and has a terrain park, cross-country trails, and a dedicated learners' area on the village side.
In summer the mountain reopens for hiking, mountain biking, and the Mount Buller Summit Walk, a flat one kilometre loop at the very top with 360 degree views of the Alps. The Australian Alps Walking Track passes through here on its 655 kilometre journey to Canberra. Summer is also when the local lakes (Eildon and William Hovell) are best for waterskiing.
The village itself is small but has a full range of restaurants, bars, and accommodation. Off-mountain, the nearby town of Mansfield is where most visitors stay, and the Delatite River has trout fishing year-round.
