Bright
Australia's Best Autumn Foliage
On the lands of the Dhudhuroa people.

A European-style alpine town at the foot of the Victorian Alps, best known for its autumn foliage, craft beer scene and proximity to three of Victoria's major ski resorts. Bright is the most popular base for outdoor recreation in the High Country.
Bright sits at the foot of the Victorian Alps in north-east Victoria, on the traditional lands of the Dhudhuroa people. The town was founded in the 1860s as a gold mining settlement in the Ovens River valley, named after the British radical politician John Bright. When the gold ran out, the surrounding farming district turned to tobacco (an old industry now gone) and to tourism (the current economic backbone). The town's population of around 2,500 swells by a factor of 10 in peak season.
Bright's defining visual feature is its autumn colour display. The town centre and the surrounding gardens were extensively planted with European deciduous trees in the early 20th century, including liquidambars, maples, plane trees, poplars and oaks. During autumn (late April to late May) the leaves turn through gold, orange and red, and the annual Autumn Festival runs through the second half of April and early May. It is one of the best autumn colour displays in Australia and is genuinely European in feel.
The town is a base for exploring the Victorian Alps, with three major ski resorts within an hour's drive: Mount Hotham (direct via the Great Alpine Road), Falls Creek (via Mount Beauty), and Mount Buffalo (30 minutes away, closed for lifts since 2008 but still a popular summer hiking and cross-country skiing destination). Winter (June to September) transforms Bright into the standard accommodation base for skiers and snowboarders heading to the mountains.
In the warmer months, the town is a cycling and mountain biking destination. The Murray to Mountains Rail Trail is a 116 kilometre sealed rail trail running through the Ovens Valley from Wangaratta to Bright and onwards to Beechworth, following the route of a former railway. Bright is also the starting point for some of the best road cycling climbs in Victoria, including the 28 kilometre climb up Mount Hotham and the 30 kilometre Falls Creek climb.
Bright has a craft beer and cider scene that punches well above its weight. Bright Brewery, on the main street, is the anchor brewery and serves as the town's unofficial town hall. Other producers in the area include Sweetwater Brewing at Mount Beauty and the growing list of cideries in the cooler-climate hills around Myrtleford and Tawonga. The town has a dense cluster of cafes and restaurants punching above its size class, centred around the pedestrian shopping strip on Ireland Street.
Mount Buffalo National Park, 30 minutes from Bright, is the single best day trip from the town. The park contains alpine ash forest, granite tors, waterfalls, and the historic Mount Buffalo Chalet (currently closed but preserved). The Cathedral walk to the granite viewpoint at the summit is one of the most dramatic short walks in Victoria.
Beyond Mount Buffalo, the region's other major destinations include the historic town of Beechworth (45 minutes north), the wine country of Rutherglen and the King Valley, and the Alpine National Park with its full network of high country walking tracks.
Bright is a year-round destination with distinct seasonal identities. Autumn is the signature season. Winter is ski season. Spring brings wildflowers and the start of the cycling season. Summer (December to February) is the peak of the cycling, hiking and river swimming season. The closest airport is Albury (ABX), 90 minutes away, with flights from Sydney and Melbourne.
