Bungaree Station
Living heritage sheep station
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Established in 1841, Bungaree Station is one of Australia's oldest and best-preserved working pastoral properties. Situated 12 kilometres north of Clare, the station's precinct of honey-coloured sandstone buildings, homestead, woolshed, shearers quarters, and stableyard, spans nearly 180 years of continuous rural history. Day visitors can join self-guided or guided tours, and heritage cottages are available for overnight stays.
The Bungaree complex is extraordinary in the breadth of its intact historic fabric. Visitors on the self-guided tour walk between more than a dozen sandstone structures that tell the story of colonial wool production, station life, and the generations of shearers, farmhands, and families who shaped the property. The woolshed in particular is a remarkable survival, still housing much of its original machinery.
For those wanting a deeper experience, guided group tours and private 4WD farm tours take visitors beyond the heritage precinct and into the working parts of the property, where sheep, cattle, and cropping operations continue today. It bridges the gap between living farm and heritage site in a way that few properties in Australia can match.
The heritage-listed stone cottages available for overnight accommodation are self-contained, each unique in character. Staying on the station after day visitors have gone gives a rare sense of the quietude and scale that defined outback pastoral life.
