Cloudehill Gardens
Cool-climate garden artistry
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Cloudehill is a five-acre cool-climate garden at the top of the Dandenong Ranges in Olinda, internationally recognised for its 25 interconnected garden rooms divided by stone walls, clipped hedges, and topiary. The gardens feature herbaceous borders, a peony garden, bluebell woodlands, and Japanese maples that have been growing on the property since 1928. An on-site nursery, restaurant, and cafe complete the visit.
The design moves from formal clipped geometry near the entrance through to relaxed bulb meadows and woodland plantings further in. Each of the 25 compartments reveals something different, peony beds, a bluebell walk, the centrepiece weeping Japanese maples, topiary forms, and the celebrated English-style summer borders that are among the finest of their kind in the southern hemisphere.
The Seasons Restaurant opens daily and serves breakfast and lunch across the garden-facing terrace, making Cloudehill a destination for a full day out. The garden shop stocks heirloom seeds, rare plants, and gardening books, and attracts serious gardeners from across the country.
Entry to the gardens costs a modest fee for adults, with children under 16 entering free. The nursery and cafe areas are accessible without paying garden admission. Cloudehill is open daily, with slightly shorter hours in winter months.
