Copper Coast Rail Trail
25 kilometres of sealed heritage trail
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Stretching 25 kilometres along the abandoned railway corridor that once carried copper ore between Kadina, Wallaroo, and Moonta, the Copper Coast Rail Trail is a fully sealed shared path for walkers, cyclists, and pram users. Completed to its current length after the Wallaroo-to-Moonta extension opened in 2022, it is the spine of active recreation in the Copper Triangle.
The trail follows two sections. The first runs 8 kilometres between Kadina and Wallaroo on mostly flat terrain, passing through a pine tree corridor and remnants of old railway infrastructure, with a shelter near the large Kadina roundabout at the eastern end. The second section runs 17 kilometres between Wallaroo and Moonta across undulating country with views of the distant Gulf St Vincent coastline and several interpretive signs that describe the mine engine houses and heritage sites along the route. Shelters, bike repair stations, and public toilets are positioned at regular intervals, and the trail is suitable for road bikes as well as mountain bikes.
Parking is available on Powell Terrace in Kadina adjacent to the trail, on John Terrace near Wallaroo's former railway station, and at the Moonta Information Centre on the old railway station. Bike hire for adults and children is available in both Moonta and Wallaroo for visitors who do not bring their own. The trail connects directly to Moonta Bay and Port Hughes, making it possible to extend a ride to the beach. The trail is free to use and open year-round during daylight hours.
