Goolwa
Where the Murray River meets the Southern Ocean after 2,500 kilometres
A historic river port town on the Fleurieu Peninsula where the Murray River completes its 2,500 kilometre journey and meets the Southern Ocean. Goolwa sits at the junction of river, lake and surf beach, and has reinvented itself as a food, wine and arts destination within easy reach of Adelaide.
Goolwa sits at the mouth of the Murray River on the southern coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula, about 85 kilometres south of Adelaide. The town was founded in the 1850s as an inland river port and was for a time the busiest port on the Murray, with paddle steamers loading wool, wheat and timber for transfer to seagoing vessels. The opening of railways to other ports gradually reduced Goolwa's shipping role, but the town has retained much of its 19th century architecture and streetscape.
The geography around Goolwa is uniquely layered. To the south is a long, powerful surf beach stretching toward the Coorong. To the north lies the vast expanse of Lake Alexandrina, the largest lake in South Australia. To the east the Coorong lagoon system begins its 150 kilometre stretch behind the sand dunes. And through the middle of it all flows the Murray River, Australia's longest river, arriving here after a journey of roughly 2,500 kilometres from the mountains of north-eastern Victoria.
The Goolwa Wharf precinct has been redeveloped into the town's social centre. The historic wharf building houses a visitor centre and gallery spaces, and the Spirit of the Coorong cruise boats depart from here for day trips into the Coorong National Park. The PS Oscar W, a restored 1908 paddle steamer, is based at the wharf and offers short cruises during events and festivals.
Goolwa has become a notable food destination. The local produce includes Coorong mullet (smoked by local fishers using traditional methods), Fleurieu milk, Currency Creek wines, and the fresh cockles harvested from the Coorong beaches by the Ngarrindjeri people. The main street has several good cafes and restaurants, and the monthly Goolwa Markets at the wharf are popular with Adelaide day-trippers.
The town is busiest in summer when the surf beach and river draw holiday-makers. Autumn is the quietest and most pleasant season. The annual South Australian Wooden Boat Festival, held every two years at the wharf, is one of the largest maritime heritage events in the country.
