A twin-town holiday destination straddling the bridge between Wallis Lake and the Pacific Ocean. Forster and its partner Tuncurry sit between the Great Lakes system and a string of surf beaches, with bottlenose dolphins that cruise the lake entrance year round.

Forster and Tuncurry face each other across the entrance to Wallis Lake on Worimi country, about three and a half hours north of Sydney. The towns are connected by a bridge over the lake outlet and together form the main service centre for the Great Lakes region of the Mid North Coast.

The ocean beaches are the main attraction. One Mile Beach, just south of Forster, is a long crescent of sand that regularly features in lists of the best beaches in New South Wales. Pebbly Beach, a short drive further south in Booti Booti National Park, is tucked between headlands and backed by forest. The Bicentennial Walk is a coastal track running from Forster Main Beach around the headland to Pebbly Beach, with clifftop views and whale-watching platforms.

Wallis Lake is the heart of the local economy and produces some of the best Sydney rock oysters in Australia. Several oyster farms offer kayak-and-shuck tours where you paddle to the lease and eat oysters straight from the water. Bottlenose dolphins live permanently in the lake and are easily spotted from the bridge or by kayak.

Forster is also the southern gateway to the Myall Lakes, a chain of freshwater coastal lakes separated from the ocean by a narrow sand barrier. The combination of lake, river, ocean beach and national park makes it one of the most versatile family holiday bases on the coast.
