Hervey Bay holds the distinction of being the world's first Whale Heritage Site, recognised by the World Cetacean Alliance in 2019. Each year from mid-July to the end of October, humpback whales travelling north from Antarctica detour into the sheltered waters of Platypus Bay to rest, nurse calves, and play before continuing their migration. Unlike most whale watching destinations, the whales linger here for days at a time.

The behaviour seen in Hervey Bay is unusual even by humpback standards. Whales regularly approach stationary vessels out of apparent curiosity, an interaction known locally as a mugging, and this occurs with higher frequency here than almost anywhere else on earth. Multiple operators run morning and afternoon cruises across the Great Sandy Marine Park, with tours operating under strict regulations designed to protect the animals.

Most half-day cruises depart from Great Sandy Straits Marina at Urangan, on the southern shore of Hervey Bay, and run for approximately three hours. Peak season is August and September when mothers with calves are most numerous. Several operators offer a guaranteed sighting or a complimentary return trip. Booking ahead during peak season is strongly advised.
