Stretching 130 kilometres along the southwestern tip of Australia, Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park spans from Cape Naturaliste in the north to Cape Leeuwin in the south - a dramatic corridor of sea cliffs, surf beaches, ancient cave systems, and coastal karri-jarrah forest. Covering around 15,600 hectares spread across 28 separate reserves, it is consistently Western Australia's most-visited national park, drawing well over two million visitors each year. The Wardandi (Wadandi) Noongar people have cared for this country for at least 40,000 years, and their deep knowledge is woven into the landscape through place names such as Yallingup ("place of caves") and Meekadarabee ("the moon's bathing place").

The Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge is one of Australia's most remarkable geological formations, an ancient spine of Tamala Limestone riddled with more than 150 caves carved by millennia of groundwater action. Six caves are open to visitors, ranging from the self-guided Calgardup and Giants caves to the illuminated chambers of Mammoth Cave and the spectacular formations of Lake Cave and Jewel Cave. These underground worlds contain well-preserved Pleistocene megafauna fossils and evidence of Noongar occupation spanning tens of thousands of years, making each descent as much a cultural and scientific journey as a sensory one.\n\nAbove ground, the park's coastline is a photographer's and adventurer's paradise. Granite headlands such as Canal Rocks and Sugarloaf Rock frame turquoise coves, while world-famous surf breaks at Supertubes and Smiths Beach draw surfers from across the globe. The full-length Cape to Cape Track - 135 kilometres of coastal walking completed in five to seven days - links the two capes and is regarded as one of Western Australia's premier long-distance hikes. The northern 3.4-kilometre section from Cape Naturaliste to Sugarloaf Rock is paved and boardwalked, making it fully accessible to prams and assisted wheelchairs.\n\nWildlife here is exceptional year-round. Between June and October, humpback and southern right whales migrate past the capes and can often be spotted from clifftop lookouts without a boat. Western ringtail possums - a threatened species - shelter in the paperbark-marri forests, while Carnaby's and Baudin's black cockatoos wheel overhead and Australian sea lions haul out on rocky shelves. Spring (September to November) transforms the coastal heath into a tapestry of wildflowers, with orchids, banksias, and grevilleas in vivid bloom, drawing botanists and photographers in equal numbers.\n\nThe park sits at the heart of the Margaret River wine region, and the surrounding area is as celebrated for food and wine as it is for nature. World-class wineries, artisan cheesemakers, and chocolate producers are within easy reach of every trailhead, making Leeuwin-Naturaliste a rare destination where a long coastal walk can be followed by a cellar-door tasting. The twin towns of Dunsborough and Margaret River serve as comfortable bases, with the Busselton Margaret River Airport (BQB) offering regular flights from Perth, placing the park within easy reach for a long weekend or a week-long road trip.
